Kettner, Leo Alfred "Bopa" Age 87, of Bloomington, left us on May 14, 2015 surrounded by family. He was born in Springfield, Minnesota. He was the only child of Alfred Kettner and Dorothy Forrest and was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law R.J Banse. Leo is survived by his wife of 64 years Mary (Curry) Kettner and their three children, daughter Patrice Kettner and her husband Bruce Ballard of Edmonds WA, son Kevin and his wife Val of Fargo, ND and daughter Kate Kettner-Banse of Bloomington. He is survived by five grandchildren Lindsay Dehnke (Leon), Collin Ballard, Brady Banse (Dena), Ben Banse and Savana Kettner. He also is survived by one great grandchild Madeline Jo Banse. Leo left home in Springfield at the age of 17 and joined the Merchant Marines serving on ships transporting troops near the end World War II. He spent his 18th birthday on a ship in the Mediterranean Ocean. Leo later served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the 461st Ordinance Ammunition Company from 1950-1952. The men he served with became lifelong "Army buddies" and for many years Leo helped organize their annual army reunion. He was a Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Everett McClay Post 1296. Leo retired from Bernard L. Dalsin Roofing where he good-humoredly earned the name "Crash Kettner". After retiring Leo and Mary enjoyed spending winters at their "other" home in St. Augustine, Florida where they cherished dear friends. Leo was a volunteer for his children's activities from Boy Scouts to chaper-oning the girls of Everett McClay Highlanders. When grandchildren came along he became 'Bopa' to all and was happiest when surrounded by family during gatherings at their Bloomington or St. Augustine home. Leo enjoyed playing cribbage. "Skunking" or being "skunked" during a cribbage game with his grandchildren brought a twinkle to his big blue eyes. The family wishes to thank Jenny Morgan and the wonderful staff at Breck Home for their very loving and attentive care. The family would also like to thank the Fairview Hospice Team including Susan RN, Tim and Janelle. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church, 901 East 90th Street Bloomington, Friday, June 19 2015 at 11AM. Interment will follow immediately after at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Friends are invited to join the family in a celebration of Leo's life that afternoon at the Kettner home in Bloomington. As we put Leo to rest his spirit, his soul, his kind heart lives on in the stories people are sharing.
