Mary 'Bucky' Massopust

Massopust, Mary "Bucky" age 93 passed away peacefully at home on April 22, 2015. She was born to Roland C. Buck and Marjory Sloane Buck in Superior, Wisconsin where she spent her childhood. Bucky attended Carleton College where she met and was courted by the future love of her life, Dick. After he returned from serving in the US Navy during WWII, they married on April 7, 1945. Bucky and Dick celebrated 52 years of marriage before his death in 1997. Their life together was a model of unconditional love, respect; and commitment to both family and each other. Bucky devoted her life to covering home base while raising four children, supporting Dick's career at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and his myriad of civic commitments. Her love of family as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was boundless. She was careful to let each person know how individually special they were. Bucky's energy and creativity wove a treasure of memories and traditions for her loved ones: ski trips, a road trip to the Rose Bowl, adventures at great aunt Janet's farm in New Ulm, lazy days (for all but her) at the Lake Nabagamon cabin, two all-family cruises, and Circus School at Club Med where inlaws and grandchildren delighted her by starring in trapeze, high rope and acrobatic-performances. Holidays were her specialty; hosting fourth of July and Labor Day celebrations at the cabin, Halloween costume parties, Christmas Eve extravaganzas, and hosting spring break and Thanksgiving visits to their home in Arizona. Bucky savored every minute of life. She had an unbounded passion for everything life had to offer. She loved golfing, skiing, hiking, playing bridge, book clubs, and lively games with her children and grandchildren ranging from "go-to-the dump" and hearts to spoons which resulted in intense competition and gales of laughter. Bucky loved being with old friends and gaining contemporary perspectives from new friends of all ages. Bucky loved to travel. She and Dick traveled extensively throughout the world but her favorite places to be were the beloved cabin her father built on Lake Nabagamon when she was a year old and their winter home in Scottsdale where she savored time with dear friends and family. She was so "styling" that her granddaughters could travel light coming home from college and borrow clothes from her wardrobe. Bucky was a woman of deep abiding faith. She was a member of Colonial Church of Edina for over 60 years and was a founding member of Pinnacle Peak Presbyterian Church in Scottsdale. Bucky is survived by her three sons and their spouses, Rick & Mo, Dave & Dana, John & Linda and her daughter and spouse, Marty & Scott Weicht; eleven grandchildren and their spouses, Betsy & Todd Johnson, Alex & Kim Massopust, Katie & Travis Lee, Bo & Ali Massopust, Lucy, Kelsey, Charlie & Lauren Massopust, Eric, Patty & Brett Weicht; and ten great grandchildren, Gabrielle, Ethan, Gideon & Juliet Johnson, Harkin, Tobi, Sylvia & Simone Lee, and Henry & Maddy Massopust; and her seven nieces, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, her cherished husband, Richard H. Massopust, her brother and his wife, Robert & Audrey Buck, her sister and spouse, Carolyn & Fred Hartley and her brother-in-law, Alexander "Bud" Massopust. The family is very grateful for her caregivers and the hospice service that guided our family in allowing Bucky to finish her amazing life journey at home in comfort, peace and dignity. Bucky's irrepressible optimism, positive outlook on life and welcoming smile will be deeply missed but never forgotten. A celebration of Bucky's life will be held Tuesday, April 28, 2 PM at Colonial Church of Edina, 6200 Colonial Way. Visitation 1 hour prior to service at the church. In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Make A Wish Foundation or donor's choice are preferred. Washburn-McReavy.com Edina Chapel 952-920-3996
