Vaughan, Sharon Rice age 73, was struck by a vehicle March 24 while on a trip to Cuba. A humble, generous warrior for peace, she became a VISTA volunteer in the early 1970s and worked with others to establish Women's Advocates, the first shelter for battered women in the U.S. She campaigned for local, national and international policies and programs to stop violence. She was a professor emerita at Metropolitan State University, where she developed courses in community violence prevention, and was board co-chair of Women Against Military Madness. She earned a doctorate from Manchester (U.K.) University. Her daughter Rachel died in 2006. Sharon leaves sons Jeremy of St. Paul and Thom (Patricia) of Pocatello, Idaho; grandchildren Tyler, Drew and Taryn; sisters Mary Bandt of North Oaks and Margaret Langland of Columbia, Mo., brother Robert Rice of Jamestown, N.D., nieces, nephews and the Martinez family.
