Miller, Fletcher Allen Sr., M.D. After 92 phenomenal years, Fletcher passed away at his home in San Diego, CA on January 25, 2015. His life was directed by two great passions: his dedication to the science and art of Surgery and his passionate love and devotion to his family. Survived by his wife, Marjorie and his 7 children, Fletcher Jr/Buzz (Debby), Girard (Michelle), Christine (John Streyle), Debbie (Wally Schwartz), Brian, Mary, Craig (Annika), 13 grandchildren, Chad (Heidi), Erin, David, Johanna, Laura, Barbara, Karen, Andrew, Michael, Nancy, Janey, Caroline, Sheridan and Annelie, 3 great grandchildren: Dane, Bennett, and Ella and his sister Eileen Omer. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Sheridan Miller, and his grandson Kevin Miller. Fletcher was born on May 16, 1922 in Iowa City, IA, son of Vern and Marie (Fletcher) Miller. He attended Iowa City High and developed a talent as a musician. He earned money in high school with his 10 piece band, the "Flet Miller Band". He played in the University of Iowa bagpipe band starting in high school and continued in this band through college. In medical school he made extra money playing his saxophone in the "Count 11 Jazz Band". He received both his B.S. (1943) and M.D. (1946) from the University of Iowa. He completed his internship in 1947 at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. It was there that he met and fell in love with Barbara Leontine Sheridan, his "wild Irish Rose." They were happily married for 44 years. He was an instructor in Pathology at Columbia University School of Medicine from 1947-1948. March of 1952 took him to Fort Knox, KY where he proudly served as a Captain in the U.S. Army until March of 1954. In 1955, he received his PhD in Surgery from the University of Minnesota. He served as an instructor with the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota from 1955-1958 under the tutelage of Owen H. Wangensteen M.D. He was an Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief of Surgery from 1958-1963 at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Creighton University Medical School in Omaha, NE from 1963-1971. In 1971 he returned to Minnesota where he served as Director of Surgery at United Hospital in St. Paul. He also taught as a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He retired in 1997 after serving tirelessly in his profession of Surgery for 51 years. However, he renewed his medical license every year up to the present date and continued to be actively engaged in continued medical education. He belonged to many societies helping to shape and direct the course of medicine. He was quite fortunate to reconnect, fall in love and marry his childhood friend, Marjorie Sidwell Gross. In October they celebrated their 21st anniversary. They made their home in San Diego, CA and enjoyed a wonderful retirement including friends, family, golf, church, and annual trips back to Millerfest at Whitefish Lake. He took great pleasure playing golf with numerous friends in California. He made two "hole-in-ones" in his life, the second one being at the age of 91. He had a long and meaningful life and did everything he set out to do. He met his journey with pancreatic cancer with bravery, integrity and a sense of peace and remained an example to his family to the end. Snelling Ave., St. Paul 651-698-0796) Funeral Service will be held 10 AM Saturday, February 7th at Lakewood Cemetery's Chapel (3600 Hennepin Ave. S., Minneapolis) with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM at the chapel. Memorials are preferred to the Mayo Foundation or the Lakes Area Food Shelf (P.O.Box 724 Nisswa, MN 56468).
