He is survived by his daughter Mary Kristen Francis; son Timothy (Laurie) Prem; 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis Prem, his daughter, Stephanie Prem, and brother, Virgil Prem. Konald was born on November 6, 1920 in St. Cloud, MN, son of Joseph and Theresa (Willing) Prem. Konald attended Cathedral High School in St. Cloud, MN, graduating from there in 1938. In high school, he was active in football. Entering college in 1938, he left to serve in the National Guard from 1941 to 1946, at which time he returned and finished his premed work at St. John's University in St. Joseph, MN. After years of courtship, he and his beloved Phyllis Jean Edelbrock wed on June 14th, 1947. Konald entered medical school at the University of Minnesota, did his residency at Minneapolis General Hospital, and then completed his advanced education in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Minnesota. After graduation, he stayed on as a staff member, rising to the rank of Full Professor of obstetrics and gynecology and serving as Department Chairman from 1976 to 1984. Education was very important to him - in the military, teaching marksmanship and tactics; as a professor, teaching medicine to students, residents, and fellows. He chose to be a part of the U of MN because it was a teaching hospital, rather than starting his own practice. Simultaneous to his medical career, he continued with the military and he was honorably discharged from the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. as a full Colonel. He was assigned as a Colonel to a large medical reserve unit at Fort Snelling in MN and was promoted to Brigadier General about 1980. Konald retired from the military with 40 years commissioned service in 1982. He continued to stay up to date with the latest medical practices, traveling the world to attend medical conferences. He had multiple writings published. Konald was a pioneer in the field of gynecological oncology and a leader in developing techniques for radical pelvic cancer surgery. He was active in the Natural Family Planning and Couple to Couple League organizations. Konald enjoyed snow skiing, gardening, hunting, fishing, reading, and spending time with his family and friends.
