Paul Franklin Gehman Paul Franklin Gehman

Gehman, Paul Franklin Our dear father, Paul Franklin Gehman, formerly of Maple Grove, MN, Heidelberg, Germany & Telford, PA, passed away on November 20, 2014 at age 80. Born on October 21, 1934, Paul was raised in and around Telford, PA. Though he left after high school, Paul retained fond memories of his hometown, and eagerly awaited the hometown newspaper (the Souderton Independent) that arrived by mail every week no matter where in the world he was living. Paul had a talent for languages, and was fluent in German, French, Spanish and Slovenian. A true wordsmith, he often delighted us with his ability to choose obscure, yet perfect words for just about any situation. Paul was a proud graduate of Ball State University (B.A., 1957) and Indiana University - Bloomington (M.A., 1970), and remained a lifelong supporter of both schools. Paul spent much of his career as an intelligence analyst for the U.S. Army in Germany, and as befits a spy, to this day none of his family knows exactly what his work entailed. Though reserved in manner, Paul had a tender and generous heart, which he often revealed in quiet ways, by offering to do an undesirable chore for you or never failing to offer you the last bite of his dessert. Paul enjoyed many things, including, in no particular order, eating Shoo-fly pie, playing tennis and bridge, watching the Twins, walking his dogs, looking up facts in the Almanac and listening to classical music. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Erwin and Mary Gehman, sister Mary Lou Groff, nephew Taric Groff, and his dogs, Sammy, Pookie Lion and Dorie. Paul will be missed and remembered by his brother Richard Gehman of Port Hueneme, CA; son Christian (Allyson) Gehman of Fort Worth, TX; daughters Melissa (Luke) Smith of Arden Hills, MN and Catherine (Kirk) Bloomquist of Shorewood, MN; 6 grandchildren: Reece and Saryn Gehman, and Lief, Miles, Anders and Lewis Smith; former wife Sue Gehman of Sacramento, CA; longtime friends, Carl (Charlene) Lawall of Yorktown, IN, and Dick (Iris) Laferera of Severna Park, MD; also by other relatives and friends. According to Paul's wishes, cremation has taken place. Paul's family will gather to remember him on Friday, November 28th, and a private interment will take place next summer at Indianfield Cemetery (Little Zion Lutheran Church) in Telford, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to the American Alzheimer's Association, the Animal Humane Society or a charity of the donor's choice. Paul's family extends special thanks to Jenny Morgan & the Breck Home staff for their dedicated care over the past year and a half.
