Daniel Panshin

Panshin, Daniel Age 76, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Pat, his brother Alexei (Cory), his son, Stephen (Sandra), his daughter, Natalie (Erika Barthelmess), and grandchildren Maclean and Helen. He was born in Lansing, Michigan. He attended high school at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and graduated from Cornell University with a B.A. in History in 1960. After serving on submarines in the Navy for four years, he attended Oregon State University where he earned a Ph.D. in Oceanography in 1971. He worked as an oceanographer doing research and extension work during his early career, before moving to Washington, D.C. in 1979, where he served on the Marine and Fisheries Congressional Committee and worked for NOAA. He was married in 1984 to Pat, and they moved to Minnesota in 1985, where he worked at the University of Minnesota as an administrator. After retirement, he gave generously of his time and talents, serving on many boards, such as Episcopal Homes and Seabury Western Theological Seminary. He was an active alumnus of Phillips Exeter Academy, serving as a class president and fundraiser. He was also very active at St. Clement's Episcopal Church and was instrumental in the creation of the Global Mission-Haiti campaign, a project which assisted in reforestation and agricultural redevelopment of Haiti. Throughout his life, he was an avid runner and ran in many marathons, from the 1970s to the 1990s. He was also very proud of his Russian heritage; he made several trips to Russia, and conducted extensive research for a book about his father's early life, which was spent in Russia. Visitation will be Friday, December 5 from 5-8pm at St. Clement's Episcopal Church, 901 Portland Avenue, St. Paul MN 55104. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 6 at 2pm, also at St. Clement's. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Haiti campaign (make checks out to St. Clement's church with memo line: GM-Haiti, Panshin).
