Rev. Stephen Leroy Gronseth

Gronseth, Rev. Stephen Leroy Age 88, of Atlantic, IA passed away November 16, 2014. He was born July 31, 1926 in Minneapolis, MN to Rev. James and Julia Gronseth. Stephen served in the US Navy on Okinawa and was discharged in 1946. He married Florence Salo at Rosedale Lutheran Church in 1949. Steve then graduated from MacPhail School of Music and taught music in the public schools.After that he served as Organist/Choir Director in a number of churches. He went on to attend Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary, and was ordained in 1966. His first church was St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Hurst, Texas. Florence died suddenly in 1968 and the family moved back to MN. Stephen continued his ministry at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church of Medicine Lake, MN followed by Zion Lutheran Church in Deerfield Beach, FL, St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Albia, IA and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, IA. While there he met Carol Nelson who he married Nov 29, 1986. He retired in 1991 but continued to serve as Chaplin at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, IA and as Interim Pastor for several local churches. He touched countless others directing the Swedish Hospital Student Nurses Choir, the Northwestern Seminary Choir, as a member of the Ecclesiastical Folk Singers and the Edith Norberg Carillon Singers, performing organ recitals, and a host of other musical endeavors too numerous to recount. He was a truly gifted and well-loved musician. He was also known for his strong faith in God and commitment to the ministry. He had the unique ability to see the best in all and genuinely believed in each of us. He also had a prodigious talent for puns that often left us groaning. Stephen was beloved by all and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife Carol Gronseth; children Steve Gronseth, Greg Gronseth, Rosanne Gronseth and Judi Gronseth; grandchildren Elyce Gronseth and Kayla Gronseth-Boyer, and many sisters and brothers in law, step children and step grandchildren. Services were held Friday, November 21, 2014 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic, IA. Memorials preferred to MacPhail Center for Music.
