Schmid, Roberta Albrecht Age 93, formerly of Two Harbors, passed away peacefully October 13, 2014. Born April 1, 1921 in Curtis, Nebraska, she spent her early life in Nebraska, Wyoming and Iowa where she graduated LeMars High School in 1937 and earned a teaching certificate at Westmar College. She taught in rural Iowa where she met and married LeRoy Schmid in 1941 and sons, Milon (1943) and Marvin (1944) were born. They moved to a farm near Ottertail, MN, where daughter Jeanne was born (1950). After life on the prairies, Roy and Roberta moved to Silver Bay in 1956. Roberta loved the North Shore and enjoyed nearly 40 years teaching in Knife River, Silver Bay and Two Harbors. Blessed with a curious mind and romantic nature she loved to read and dreamed of "faraway places with exotic names." The English language was a big part of her life- Scrabble, journaling for 70 years, taking third in Wyoming's Spelling Bee as a child, earning a place in the Minnesota Senior Bee and reading. Roberta loved travel: camping, an extended stay in Australia, the Wagner Festival in Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia and the World War II sites in France and Belgium. In her eighties she enjoyed road-trips through the US, swimming with the dolphins and the Panama Canal. Education and family were key parts of Roberta's life. Proud of her college degrees, she encouraged family, students and friends to keep on learning. In retirement Roberta volunteered in Lake County Schools and was a reader for the MN books for the blind program. She was an active member of the United Church of Two Harbors. Preceded in death by husband, Roy; son, Milon. She is survived by son, Marvin (Geri) of Plymouth; daughter, Jeanne Myers (Ron) of Silver Bay; daughter-in-law, Phyllis of Rochester; grandchildren, David (Lisa) Schmid of Minnetonka, Andrew Schmid of Rochester, Jeanene Schmid of Plymouth, Ron Myers Jr (Misty) of Brainerd, Rachel Worner (Chad) of Farmington, and Shawn Myers (Mandy) of Paynesville; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Bauermeister, Carol Dare, Helen (Ray) Carucci and Audrey Albrecht; brothers, Jim (Adela) and Merlin; brother-in-law, Ray Shields; legions of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at The United Church of Two Harbors. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Northwoods Children's Services of Duluth or The United Church. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Minnesota.
