Erna Bachtold

Bachtold, Erna (Wallin) Age 98, of Edina, MN passed away 9/28/14. A graduate of Edison High NE Mpls and attended the University of Minnesota. Former resident of Dayton, WA & Lausanne, Switzerland. Erna had a wide variety of interests including folk dancing, both as a dancer & an instructor. She was a member of the MN Folk Dance Federation, Sundowner's and Zuhrah Shrine Masquers. She received a 500-hour-volunteer award from the U.S.O. for hosting Japanese-American military intelligence soldiers at Camp Savage during WWII. She retired from both General Mills and the U of M Arboretum. She continued to volunteer for the Arboretum Auxiliary (42 years) in many capacities: drying flowers, working plant sales, fall festivals and serving as the historian. She belonged to garden clubs in Edina & Richfield. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, U of M Women's Club & Retiree Assoc., Am. Swedish Institute, among others. Together, Erna and husband, Walter were avid contributors to a wide variety of organizations: Minnesota, Edina, Walla Walla WA, Carver County, & Western Hennepin Co. Historical Societies, International Crane Foundation, Wood Lake Nature Center, MN Center for Book Arts, Children's and MN History Theatre. Last year, Erna was honored by the U of M for her many contributions and invited to join the Presidents Club. She was a long time member of Christ Presbyterian Church. A lifelong learner, she enjoyed frequent travels with Elderhostel, made several trips to Hawaii, Europe and saw much of the U.S. She was passionate about reading and collecting cookbooks. Preceding her in death were her husband, Walter; brother, Elmer Wallin; sister & brother-in-law, Lucille & Ralph Sjoberg; as well as Carolyn's life partner, Bill Jeannotte. Erna is survived by daughters, Carolyn, Glasgow, MT & Helen (Jari Cenfield), Bloomington, MN. The family offers special thanks to Heather Mainella, "the other daughter"; the support from Judy Goblirsch and family; and Barbara Cohen for keeping mom active. Appreciation to the JCPenney Salon staff at Edina and Eden Prairie for keeping up appear-ances and The Colony of Eden Prairie for the care extended the last six months of her life. Following Erna's wishes, graveside services will take place at Ft. Snelling at a later date. Memorials may be directed to any of the listed organizations or donor's choice.
