German was her first language and stayed with her all her life. She learned to bake bread by age 10 and never stopped. Anna's formal education ended during her eighth year in school and she always felt inadequate due to her lack of education. She was delight-ed to recently receive an honorary high school diploma signifying her almost a century of life learning. In 1938, Anna married Arnold Carlson and they raised four children on their farm in Eagan. They traveled to Europe for the first time in 1970, visiting 7 countries including Arnold's relatives in Sweden. In 1996, Anna traveled to Germany spending her 80th birthday visiting a cousin she had never met. Anna loved to sing. She sang in the choir in her youth - both in German and English. After her recent hospitalization, she serenaded the paramedics all the way home. She was proud when her son was elected a member of the Minnesota State Senate. Two of Anna's passionate hobbies were quilting and gardening. Anna loved her flowers. She used to take her lunch outside every day when weather permitted and if not she would eat her lunch by the window looking out at the flowers and birds. She started sewing at an early age and became a wonderful quilter. One of the early members of the Minnesota Quilters. Most of her quilts were given as gifts to those she loved. If you received one of Anna's quilts, wrap yourself in it and feel her love surround you. Mom, you can see again, hear again and walk unassisted again, be at peace.
