Thomas Lynn Obermeyer

Obermeyer, Thomas Lynn 72, of Minneapolis, passed away on Septem-ber 5, 2014. Tom was an architect, a professor, an author, and an amazing husband, father and grandfather, and a Golden Gopher. Born on October 25, 1941, Fairmont, MN, he grew up an only child, his father 62-years-old at the time of his birth. He graduated Fairmont High School, 1959; University of Oklahoma, Bachelor of Architecture, 1965; University of Minnesota, Master of Education and Doctor of Education, PhD, 1983, 1993. His first job was at The Cerny Associates Architects, St. Paul, then to the Minneapolis office, 1968-70. He taught in the Architectural Technology program in the Minnesota State College and University system for 44 years, also the capstone Creative Problem Solving and Critical Thinking, Masters program, St. Mary's University, Twin Cities campus. He also headed Thomas Obermeyer Architect and authored seven books on architecture with McGraw-Hill. But he especially enjoyed his students. He led them to Europe each summer, 1978-1990; his family continued through 2014. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Engineering Honorary; Alpha Sigma Phi, social fraternity and a licensed architect in the state of Minnesota. Tom was known for his quick-quirky sense of humor and friendly ways, every transaction and meeting. Death at 72 of such a vibrant man was unexpected and heartbreaking. He will be missed by friends, clients and peers, but especially by his extended family of 30 who gather every Christmas, since 1949. He enjoyed watching his grandsons grow, their talents and many interests, and he so respected and loved the woman his daughter became, professionally and personally. His only son-in-law was his best friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 1/2 years, Mary Beth (Sartor); daughter Kristin Quinby (Christopher) and grandsons Jack, 15; Brooks, 13, Edina Mn. He was preceded in death by his son Mark, 27, and by his parents, John and Renata (Monhardt) Obermeyer; also by brother, David, at birth. A mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of St. Mary, Monday, October 13, 12 noon, Minneapolis. October 13 marks the 20th year anniversary of his son Mark's service, and the 45th of his father.
