Robert Flynn

Flynn, Robert "Mick" Mick Flynn passed away peacefully on September 18, 2014, with his family at his side. His contagious enthusiasm for life and people will be missed by many. Mick was born on June 15, 1924, to Robert Elmore Flynn, Fargo, ND, and Ruth Eliot Richards, Pearly, MN. The nurses nicknamed him "Mick" in the delivery roomand it stuck. He was raised in Fargo and Detroit Lakes where his family spent their summers for 75 years. Mick graduated from Fargo High School in 1942 where he became an Eagle Scout and learned to dance. Like many members of The Greatest Generation, he enlisted in the US Navy and flew as a radioman aboard the US Boxer aircraft carrier in the Pacific Fleet during WWII. He rarely spoke of his service but was a proud patriot. After the war he enrolled at the University of Minnesota where he majored in political science and worked as a page at the state capital. He was a member of Theta Chi fraternity and luckily met his future wife Dorothy Jean Hartle at the U. They were married on July 28, 1951, and celebrated 62 years of marriage last year. Mick and Dorothy were active supporters of the University of Minnesota, the College of Liberal Arts, and members of the University of Minnesota Presidents Club. They are lifelong Gopher football fans. Following graduation Mick owned his own businesses in both Brainerd and Detroit Lakes before moving to Edina in 1963 where he had a long association with Jostens. Mick was active in his community, a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary Foundation Major Donor, president of the Rotary Club of Edina, president of the West Suburban Shrine Club, and active in Masons, Elks, Forever Fit, politics and other organizations. He loved people, sharing a good joke and was always willing to help organize a party. He lived the Rotary motto of "Service above self." He was always grateful for the chance to meet great friends in each of these organizations. A special thank you to the members of English Rose Suites. Your love and compassion were a blessing for Mick and his family and let him live his final years with enjoyment, dignity and honor. Thank you! His loving wife Dorothy, father and mother preceded Mick in death. His son John Flynn, Deephaven, MN; his grandson Ryan Flynn, a sophomore at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln; and sister Sally Metcalf of Erie, PA, survive him. He was very proud of his family. Above all Mick was kind, considerate and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, community volunteer and friend to many. He is loved deeply by his family and will be missed more than words can express. We hope Mick's friends can join us for a celebration of his life on Saturday, October 4. In lieu of flowers the family suggests people donate to Alzheimer's Association or the charity of their choice. Memorial Service Saturday, October 4, 10 AM with visitation 1 hour before service and reception to follow at: Washburn-McReavy.com Edina Chapel 952-920-3996 West 50th St. & Hwy 100
