Michael Stevens

Stevens, Col. Michael Born on Sept. 21, 1923, the son of Martin and Susan Stevens. Preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Rosemary Findlay. He is survived by his brother, Raymond of Sebring, FL and his twin sisters, Monica (Tom) of New Prague, MN and Veronica (Fred, dec.) of Eden Prairie, MN and their families. He graduated from high school in Westbrook, MN in 1941. In April of 1942, he enlisted in the USAF. He attended college at Texas A & M, he graduated from flying school in 1943. He flew 50 combat missions in B25 aircraft during WWII. After his discharge, he attended the U of M and graduated in 1947. He worked as a MN State Policeman in 1948. He returned to active duty in the Korean War in 1951. After the war he remained in the Air Force. He was assigned to the SAC flying B52s. He volunteered to fly fighter bombers in Vietnam. He returned to SAC in 1967. Col. Stevens flew with a crew nonstop around the world in 47 hours & 19 minutes, refueling 5 times. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross from Gen. LeMay, Chief of SAC. He also received 7 Air Medals and the Bronze Star for his serivce. He retired after 32 years of service. He returned to college for his Master's degree. He retired to his lake home in Park Rapids, MN and he resided in Sebring, FL for 4 years, where he passed away on Sept. 12, 2014. Interment with military honors presided by Father Michael Kaluza will be held 11:30 AM Friday, Sept. 26, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, meet at gate 2, area #2.
