Rose Mary O'Brien

O'Brien, Rose Mary Shewchuk Loving wife and mother, nurse, accomplished office and home manager and cherished friend, peacefully died at home in Menlo Park, CA on July 19 at the age of 87. Rose Mary was born in Rochester, NY. She was the daughter of immigrant Ukrainian parents who arrived through Ellis Island in New York City, and was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage. She received a BS and an RN degree in a five-year program from the University of Rochester, NY, and was appointed assistant senior nursing arts instructor in 1949. She served as ward nurse supervisor and head nurse at an early age. In 1951, she enrolled at the University of Chicago graduate school of nursing education, and at age 23 was the youngest in her class. She left school to marry, and managed the office and finances of a thriving solo private medical practice, in addition to running the household for six children. Rose Mary was also a talented cook who loved to entertain. She was an energetic role model who took responsibility for the education and nurturing of her family. She instilled a strong work ethic in her children by example and imbued them with a love of travel and a passion for exploration from an early age through regular family trips. Wife of the late William A. O'Brien Jr, MD, she is survived by her sister, Mary Kuchmy, children Maureen O'Brien, Susan Wheeler Goodnow (Tom), William A. O'Brien III, MD (Fanella), Eileen O'Brien (John), Megan Mykytka (Bill), and grandchildren William IV, Meredith, Andrew, Tatiana, Sean, Mykola and Zachary. Preceded in death by her son, Timothy O'Brien (Monika). A private memorial service will be held on Friday, September 19, at 2:30 at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
