Victor Allen Buchanan

Buchanan, Victor Allen "Buck" 91 of Longville, MN, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2014. He was born on May 1, 1923, to Victor S. Buchanan and Anne (Davis) Buchanan in Hinsdale, IL. Survivors include his wife, Marian; daughter, Kit (Tim) Arnquist; sons, Mark (Barbara) Buchanan, and Jay (Robin) Buchanan; grandchildren, Kate (Zach) Lee, Lucas (Amy) Buchanan, Matt (Josselyn) Buchanan, Scott Buchanan, and Brenton Buchanan; great-grandchildren, Manny Jingco, Claire Lee, Oliver Lee, and (soon-to-be) Brenna Buchanan. Buck was preceded in death by an infant brother, one sister, and three nieces. Buck was raised in several places including the Kenwood area of Minneapolis and Wayzata. He graduated from Wayzata H.S. and then attended the University of Minnesota. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII and also served in the Army Signal Corps. On September 28th, 1949, Buck was joined in marriage to Marian Wilhelmi in St. Paul, MN. They lived in the Minnetonka and Wayzata areas and raised 3 children. Throughout his career in sales, he worked for Sports Afield Magazine, Midwest Radio and TV, WCCO Radio (eventually as sales manager) and the CBS Network. During his working years he was on the board of directors of The Minneapolis Athletic Club, The Minneapolis University Club, The Twin Cities Advertising Club and The Association of Manufacturers Representatives. He had been president of The Twin Cities Radio Broadcasters, president of The Uncle Fogy Conservation foundation and served on the advisory board of the Long Lake Conservation Camp at Aitkin. He also served with the Minneapolis JC's, the Sports and Attractions committee of the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce and The United Way. Buck was inducted into the WCCO Radio Salesman's Hall of Fame. In 1985 he retired and they moved to Longville. In 1961 he and Marian had built a cabin on Long Lake near Longville and spent many weekends and summers there with the kids. Because of their love of the Longville area and its people, Buck and Marian built a retirement home on Little Boy Lake and moved up permanently. During their retirement they traveled the states, including Alaska and Hawaii. They visited Australia, New Zealand and the British Isles tracing his roots in Scotland and finding the Buchanan Castle. Always an ardent hunter and fisherman, Buck also enjoyed golf, bowling, handball and 3-cushion billiards. He spent many a weekend duck hunting with his friends and sons Mark and Jay. Throughout his life and later years, Buck especially enjoyed spending time with his golf buddies on the course. This month Buck and Marian would have celebrated 65 years of marriage: Love, Laughter and Sunsets. Marian and the family thank Father Mike Patullo, the local EMT's, Seth Robison and the dedicated and caring staff at Good Samaritan in Pine River. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Longville, MN, on Friday, September 5, 2014. Father Mike Patullo will officiate. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
