George D. Peterson

Peterson, George D. age 91, died peacefully on 8-8-2017. George was born March 7, 1926, in Frederic, WI. George enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July, 1943. He served in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged as an ETI First Class in 1946. Graduating with honors in 1950 from Superior State College, Superior, WI, he began a 36-year career as a teacher of English: one year in Lodi, WI; six years as a critic teacher at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, MN; and twenty-nine years in Hibbing, MN. He was HHS English Department chairman for twenty-eight, retiring in 1986. A lifetime member of the National Education Association, MEA, and HEA, he served as local president for several years, on the MEA constitution board for six years, and on the MEA Board of Directors for 8 years. In 1989 he moved to the Twin Cities and joined the Jack Wold Fine Art Gallery on Nicollet Avenue. George was preceded in death by his wife and best friend of 38 years, Bette Lee; his sister, Shirley Frederickson; and brothers, Dennis and Neil. He is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. During his years of teaching, George inspired many students and will live on in their hearts and minds forever. As per his wishes no formal services will be held. Graveside memorial will be held in Superior, WI at a later date.
