James Michael O'Meara

O'Meara, James Michael born March 9, 1937 in Farmington, Minnesota. Died unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep on June 29, 2017 in his home in Jefferson, Texas, from complications following heart bypass surgery in 2015. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan Kathleen Schepers O'Meara, his children Vicki and Nicolas, his grandsons Joseph and Nicolas, his brother Thomas and sister Rosemary and many nieces and nephews. Jim O'Meara had an illustrious and honored career as a Minneapolis police detective for more than 20 years. In the 1960s, at a time when Minneapolis was besieged with drug related crimes, O'Meara had the singular distinction of being appointed, as a patrolman, by the city's Mayor to lead the police department's Morals and Narcotics division. O'Meara's success in this role and his later achievements as Deputy Chief of Police and Chief of Detectives led to his being featured frequently by noted Minneapolis Star and Tribune columnist Jim Klobuchar, who is also the father of U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar. Also, during his career O'Meara headed the police department's Property Crimes Division, founded and led the first Family Violence Unit and worked as a Lead Detective in the Homicide Division. O'Meara's innovative leadership style, insightful quick humor, and intense heartfelt dedication to his family and friends are just a few of the many reasons he is deeply missed.
