Knatterud, Shirley Elaine Erlandson 89, died on May 22, 2017, in Roseville, MN. She was born to Edward and Emma Holden Erlandson on May 28, 1927, in Mankato, MN, and baptized at Rapidan Norwegian Lutheran Church. Her parents and all of her grandparents farmed in the area. She attended school in Rapidan, graduating as high school valedictorian in 1945. She earned her 2-year teaching degree in 1947 at Mankato State, then took a position teaching grades 5-6 in Nicollet, MN, where she met the high school principal, Alden C. Knatterud. They were married on August 12, 1948, at Rapidan Norwegian Lutheran Church. After teaching at a one-room schoolhouse near Mabel, MN, she moved to Pipestone, MN, for 5 years, where Alden was the high school principal; then, in 1956, he became the high school principal in Moorhead, MN. While raising 4 children, she returned to college, graduating summa cum laude in 1970 from Moorhead State (B.S. degree: major, Elementary Education; minor, Library Science). She was also certified in Special Education. She taught for 20 years for Moorhead Public Schools: 5 years in Georgetown, 3 in Sabin, and 12 as a 2nd-grade teacher at Riverside Elementary in Moorhead. She retired in 1995 at age 68. She was preceded in death by her husband (on October 26, 2012); 2 brothers, Harold and John; and 1 sister, Mildred. She is survived by 4 children, Kathryn Luther (Jerome) of Fargo; Mary Knatterud (James Johnson) of St. Paul; Richard Knatterud (Pauline) of Helena, MT; and John Knatterud of St. Paul. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Jennifer Luther Olson (Nicholas) of Fargo, Christopher Luther (Lisa) of Fargo, Justin Luther of Atlanta, GA, Joshua Knatterud-Hubinger of St. Paul, Nathan Knatterud-Hubinger of St. Paul, Elizabeth Knatterud of Reno, NV, and Emma Knatterud-Johnson of Madison, WI; 2 step-grandchildren, Bryce Johnson of Cotter, AR, and Janis Diamond of St. Augustine, FL; 3 great-grandchildren, Chase Olson, Chelsea Olson, and Lincoln Luther, all of Fargo; 2 brothers, Edward Erlandson of Lakeville, MN, and Gerald (Selma) Erlandson of Milaca, MN; and many beloved nephews, nieces, and friends. Memorials preferred to the Rapidan Heritage Society, or the charity of your choice.
