Dr. Daryl John Batalden, MD

Batalden, Dr. Daryl John MD Dr. Daryl John Batalden MD age 73 of Dayton, MN passed away at home on Friday May 19, 2017, in the loving care of his wife of 50 years Carla, his children, family and friends. Daryl was born on March 7, 1944 in Springfield, MN, the first child of his parents Fern and Cameron Batalden. He was raised on the family farm near Lamberton, MN, graduated from Lamberton High School 1962 and then attended Gustavus Adolphus College where he met his future wife Carla and graduated cum laude in 1966. Daryl then received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in 1970. He completed his Internship at St. Paul Ramsey Hospital 1970-1971, and then went on to complete a 5 year Surgical Residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in 1976. He was Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1978 and then recertified in 1997. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Batalden was a founding member of the medical group Specialists in General Surgery and practiced General Surgery from 1976 to 2009. He was on the medical staff of Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, Unity Hospital in Fridley, North Memorial Medical Center in Minneapolis, Buffalo Hospital in Buffalo, MN, and Monticello-Big Lake Community Hospital in Monticello, MN. He was a Clinical Instructor for the Dept. of Surgery at the University of Minnesota, and on the Attending Staff at the Hennepin County Medical Center. Dr. Batalden was Chief of Surgery at Unity Hospital in 1982, Chief of Staff at Unity Hospital in 1984, Chief of Staff at Mercy Hospital in 1990-1991, Board Member of the Hennepin County Medical Society from 1987-1991, Board of Governors Unity/Mercy Hospitals 1990-1995, and Chairman of Mercy/Unity Physicians Hospital Organization 1993-1996. He was honored with the Doctor of the Year award at Unity Hospital and bestowed the Physician Recognition Leadership Award in 1995. Daryl was married to Carla Ann Anderson on February 11,1967 at Grace Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND. Carla and Daryl celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary this year. Their twins Matthew and Melissa were born on May 24th, 1971 in Minneapolis, and their daughters Sabrina and Sierra came into their care in 1996 and were adopted in March of 2001. Dr. Batalden was an avid long-distance bike rider, hiker and skier. He did the RAGBRAI ride across Iowa multiple times and recruited family and friends to join him. Over 30 years ago, Daryl began a yearly tradition of a father's day weekend canoe trip for his friends and their children on the Namakagon River and these canoe buddies have remained some of the most significant people in his life. He also enjoyed hiking and contributing to the upkeep on the Superior Hiking Trail on Minnesota's North Shore. Daryl is survived by his wife Carla and their children, son Matthew (Heda) Batalden of Minneapolis, daughters Melissa (Joaquin) Batalden Mendez of Edina, MN and Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, Sabrina Batalden of Dayton, MN, Sierra Batalden of Sioux Falls, SD, and daughter of his heart, Sable Brandt of Rochester, NY.; Carla and Daryl have 6 grandchildren (Andrew, Anna, Sophia, Benjamin, Maja, and Jeremiah). Daryl is survived by brother Craig (Gwen) Batalden of Lamberton, MN and sister Susan (Thomas) Krinke of Ham Lake, MN; Godchildren Chris, Josh, Joey, Kate, Peter, Wendy and Nels; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Fern and Cameron Batalden. The family would like to thank their Heartland Hospice team for providing such loving care, allowing Daryl to remain in his home, enjoying his beautiful view of the Mississippi River. They would also like to thank the members and their many friends from First Congregational UCC church of Anoka. Lastly and so importantly, they would like to thank and extend appreciation for their many friends, family members and neighbors who have been an invaluable part of their caring village. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested for First Congregational UCC church of Anoka, Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Second Harvest Heartland Food Bank. A celebration of Daryl's life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 2nd at First Congregational UCC Church of Anoka (1923 N. 3rd Ave.) Time of gathering starting at 10:00 am on Friday at the Church.
