She was preceded in death by her parents Emma and Stan Kaneski; sisters Ruth and Jean; and her husband of 58 years, William O. Horbal. She is survived by; her son Steven Horbal (Mimi Taylor); daughter Lynn Horbal; foster son Chris Holland; grandchildren Marcus, Stephanie, and Bryce Horbal; her sister-of-the heart Rosemary Rocco; and her global sisterhood. The dual themes of Koryne's life were family and political activism for nearly six decades she inspired thousands of women, especially in Minnesota, to join the struggle for women's rights. She was but a young mother of two when, following the model set by her father's heroine, Eleanor Roosevelt, she experienced her first political victory saving a park beloved by neighborhood children. She served for nine years as DFL State Chairwoman, and in 1973 co-founded the DFL Feminist Caucus. She promoted feminist issues in the National Democratic Party and was appointed by President Carter as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. She was executive director of the Wonder Woman Foundation and founded a home for troubled youth. In 2008 Augsburg College awarded her an honorary doctorate and established a lecture series in her honor. Our thanks to all who were so incredibly supportive of Koryne over her life and especially as her health declined over the last years. Bouquets of gratitude to Care Free Cottages assisted living program, the Heartland Hospice team who carried all of us through many months, and the medical and care teams at Johanna Shores. In particular, we thank Dr. Jim Adams for his constancy and care.
