Miriam (Rodholm) Showalter

Showalter, Miriam Rodholm 97, died on April 10, 2017 at Jones Harrison Residence in Minneapolis, Minnesota after a long illness. She was preceded in death by parents, Soren and Marie Rodholm, siblings Nanna, Ansgar, Dagmar, Thora, Asta, Karma and Bernard, husband, Dr. Laurence Showalter and son, Dr. Scott Showalter. Miriam was born in Askov, Minnesota, grew up in Des Moines and attended Grand View College and Drake University. She taught a year before joining the Army as a physical therapist and served in England, France and Germany during World War 2. Miriam moved to Chicago, married Laurence, and raised their two children after his death. She attended graduate school at Roosevelt University and Indiana University, and retired as a Professor of Education at Roosevelt University. She moved to Minneapolis, supervised student teachers, visited terminally ill patients, sorted books for the library, volunteered with Courage Center and served on several boards while pursuing her interest in Danish culture. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren, her friends, her Danish heritage, her book club, liberal politics, a good rye Manhattan, festive meals, thoughtful conversation and expressing her opinion. She is survived by her daughter Renee (Bob), granddaughters Emma and Laura, her beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Service will be held at St. Peder Lutheran Church in Minneapolis on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 2:00 pm.
