D. Keith Johnston, M.D.

Johnston, D. Keith M.D. D. Keith Johnston, M.D., died Wednesday, March 22, 2017, in Fridley, Minnesota. Born November 23, 1923, in Lanigan, Saskatchewan, Canada, he spent most of his childhood on a farm near Jansen, Sask. During WWII he served his country as a member of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals attached to the Second Canadian Armoured Brigade and proudly participated in the Allied Invasion of Normandy. At war's end, he used his veteran's benefits to earn a BA in Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon and his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario, London. Following several years of general medical practice in Saskatchewan he completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota in 1965. He practiced anesthesia chiefly at Abbott Hospital and Minneapolis Children's Health Center and was instrumental in developing the anesthesia program for Minneapolis Children's when the hospital opened in 1973. Keith was predeceased by his wife Denise (Bethune) in 2010, his parents Fred and Iola (Stewart) Johnston and his brothers, Gerald, Jim and Dale. Survivors include his daughters Shelley (Brian) Colvin, Noreen (Tim) Davis and Donna (David) Osteraas, seven grandchildren Gary (Liza) Colvin, Dave Colvin, Doug (Shannon) Johnston, Elizabeth Duykers, Craig Davis, Hayden Osteraas and Hannah (Jason) Youngkrantz and four great grandchildren, Logan and Rory Johnston, Victoria Colvin and Hunter Young-krantz. The family wishes to extend a special thank you and much love to Viola Simoke, who has been Keith's caregiver and "fourth daughter" since 2010. At his request, there will be no funeral. The family will gather this summer at his beloved cabin to celebrate his life and take his tractors for a spin. If desired, memorials in Dr. Johnston's name may be given to Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota (giving.childrensmn.org/…).
