William Carr 'Bill' Vander Bie

Vander Bie, William Carr "Bill" passed away on March 15, 2017 at the age of 90. He was born on Oct. 13, 1926 to Frank and Maude Vander Bie (deceased). His wife, one love and best friend of over 60 years, Elizabeth "Bette" (Helps), also preceded him in death. William is survived by his four children; sons Mark and Mike of Apple Valley Mn, Matthew (Karla) of Houston, AK, and daughter MaryJane (Monte) Depolo of Portola, Ca, 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Bill is a graduate of Hamline University receiving his B.S. degree (Chemistry Major) in 1951. He was an active student, having served as president of the local Chapter of American Chemical Society, and president of the Phi Delta fraternity. After graduation, Bill took his new bride Bette to International Falls, Mn where he was employed in the research laboratory for the Minnesota Ontario Paper Company. That was the start of Bills 41 years of employment, almost all of it in research and development. Bill and Bette were both active in golf and curling, in their church and in the Boy Scouts of America. Bill was one of several in the laboratory who mentored high school students interested in science. Bill loved the outdoors, having made four canoe trips into the Ontario National Forest of Canada. In later years, Bill and Bette learned to square dance, taking active rolls in the Skyline Squares Club and serving as editors of the state square dance magazine (The Roundup). Bill and Bette were also snowbirds for thirteen years. They introduced Bocci Ball play at their park in California; teaching, organizing and serving as manager and president of the club. At the time of his retirement in 1992, Bill was manager of Product Engineering for the Conklin Company. In retirement, Bill continued to enjoy golf, his large musical collection and especially playing duplicate bridge with Bette. They were considered by their peers to be a very tough pair!
