William 'Bill' Samuelson

Samuelson, William "Bill" (Oct. 28, 1930 - Jan. 9, 2017) was known for indelible optimism and innate appreciation for life that inspired all who knew and loved him. Married for 61 years to his beloved soulmate Peggy until her passing in 2015, they are now forever reunited in God's providence. A native of Duluth and later the western suburbs of Minneapolis, Bill was known as a tireless worker and entrepreneur in the meat-grocery industry. An active member of First Lutheran Church in Duluth and later Westwood Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park, his life-long hunger for learning inspired non-stop study of spiritual and classical philosophers, theologians and scholars. Family gatherings were never complete without discussion of the works of Plato, Socrates and Aristotle. His legacy, while vast, most certainly includes his love of learning and desire to pass on his unique, inclusive and optimistic faith-based philosophy through his extensive written works that will be read and cherished by his family for generations. A consummate family man, he was a remarkably devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher and coach. Bill could find beauty and God's presence in all things and in all people. His love of nature contributed to his passion for landscaping and gardening. He loved sports of all kinds, and fittingly, won the family football board a week before his passing. Preceded in death by his wife Peggy, parents Bill and Gerda and sister Shirley. Survived by children Wendy (Mike) Forsyth, Jane (Brett) Shain, Tom (Carol), Tim (Julie) and Steve (Julie); grandchildren: Lindsay (Adam) Dittberner, Dan (Dominika) Forsyth, Sam (Kara) Shain, Josh Shain, Annie (Mike) Hoffman, Jamie, Megan, Anders, Annika, Jake, Leila, Cora; great grandchildren Jack and Claire and cherished friend Mary Walters.
