George W. Horan

Horan, George W. 95, Edina, passed away on January 15, 2017 as a result of Alzheimer's disease, which was diagnosed approximately two years ago. He was one of four children born to George M. Horan and Theresa (Fisher) in Minneapolis. He grew up in "Nordeast" Minneapolis and then the family moved to 'the suburbs" of Columbia Heights. He attended Edison High School and then Columbia Heights High School where he played football, basketball and baseball for the "orange and green." He graduated in 1939. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served on a PT boat during World War II as a radioman. Just prior to the war ending, he was selected to attend officer training school. Following his service and utilizing the GI Bill, he attended the University of California at Berkeley and then the University of Minnesota, where he earned a BS degree in engineering. In 1947 he started his career with 3M Co. in St. Paul. He held various engineering positions in Minnesota and Chicago and then management positions, including assignments in New Ulm, MN, Brussels, Belgium, Cincinnati, OH and St. Paul where he retired after 33 years with the company. In 1950, George married Vivian Louise Morgan from Proctor, MN and together they raised seven children. In 1981, George and Vivian retired to San Antonio, TX where they continued to reside until Vivian's death due to cancer in 2000. George then returned to the Twin Cities where he continued to reside until his death. George is survived by all seven of his children: Mary and (Greg Cardinal) of Mpls., James (and Eileen) of Eagan and Phoenix, Thomas (and Julie) of Tulsa, OK, Patrick (and Kathy) of Edina, Megan of Coon Rapids, Shannon of Blaine and Timothy of San Antonio, TX; 15 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. George was predeceased by his sister, Margie; his brothers, Jim and Pat; and his granddaughter, Misty. A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, January 29, 2017, visitation at 1:00 p.m., service at 2:00 p.m., at the First Memorial Funeral Chapel, Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Ave South, Edina, MN 55435 (952-924-4100). Memorials preferred to Park Nicollet Methodist Hospice.
