Grace (Carter) van Vliet

van Vliet, Grace Carter age 83, passed away peacefully October 13, 2016, at N.C. Little Hospice in Edina. Survived by children: Rick (Cindy), Annette (Duncan) Leighton, John, Rob (Ana Morel); brother: Edward G.L. Carter; grandchildren: Nina van Vliet, Paul & Caroline van Vliet, Dave & Johnny Leighton; step-grandchildren: Scott Ludes and Brenda (Ken) LaChance; step-great-grandsons: Bailey & Cameron LaChance; nieces, nephews, and many friends. Preceded in death by husband: Willem Frederik van Vliet; brother: Christopher S. Carter, and grandson: Willem Frederik van Vliet. Grace was born in New York City on February 26, 1933. She was the only daughter of Margaret Leonard Carter (Marnie) and Edward Perkins Carter, Jr (Ned). Grace grew up in upstate New York. Her family lived in Mt. Kisco and spent summers in the Adirondacks. Grace attended Emma Willard School (Troy, NY), and Wheaton College (Norton, Mass). She married Willem in 1953. They raised their family while living in White Plains, NY; Lake Bluff, IL; Wassenaar, The Netherlands; Northfield, IL; and Mendota Heights, MN. Since 1996, Grace has lived in Inver Grove Heights, MN; Naples, FL; and Plymouth, MN, surrounded by friends and family, cheering on the Twins, traveling, knitting, stitching, Wii bowling, and watching her grandchildren grow up. It was Grace's request that there be no services, and that anyone wishing to honor her memory may do so with a gift to the charity of their choice.
