Oliver T. 'Bogie' Bogen

Bogen, Oliver T. "Bogie" Bogie passed away August 22, 2016, at the age of 93, at Ebenezer Care Center. Ollie (Bogie) loved the outdoors, watersports, canoeing, swimming, water skiing, and snow skiing. He was a Professional and Certified Ski Instructor and Lifeguard. He grew up next to Lake Nokomis in Mpls, and graduated from Roosevelt High school. Ollie graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Physical Therapy, and worked in the Twin Cities as a PT for 50 years into his 70's. He was recognized for his dedication to his field while being the Director of Physical Therapy at Oak Ridge Care Center (article: St. Paul Pioneer Press August 1, 1976). He was also one of the first Physical Therapists to do Home Care in the Mpls-St. Paul area. Bogie was a Founder of the University of Minnesota Gophers Rowing Club in 1957 and was their first Head Coach from 1957 1964. There are two racing shells in the Boathouse bearing his name. The Minnesota men's crew has earned many awards and Championships since that time. Ollie was also involved in the Mpls Rowing Team. Ollie was a WW II Army Veteran and served in the Army Air Corps, finally working in the Medical/Surgical areas and helping to rehabilitate soldiers in the swimming pool. Ollie was preceded in death by his parents: Iver and Nora (Tondevold) Bogen; his brothers: Robert Bogen and Iver Bogen, Jr. and his sisters: Ardus Greenwald and Irene Lysen. He is survived by his sister Dorothy "Dotty" Barefield; his son Greg (Karen) Winch of Sarasota, FL; his daughter Leslie (Dennis) Twenge of Spokane, WA, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A "Going Home/Celebration of Life" Ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 4th at 3:00 PM at the University of Minnesota Boathouse/ Mississippi River at 550 East River Parkway, Mpls., MN 55455.
