Virginia Rose Killmer

Killmer, Virginia Rose Age 95, of Falcon Heights, Apple Valley, and Grand Marais, passed away August 13, 2016. Preceded in death by husband Marion Killmer, parents Rosa and Homer Massie, brothers Howard (Linnea) and Philip (Auneda) Massie, nephews Thomas and Jerry Massie, grandson Andrew Killmer, daughter-in-law Penny Killmer. Survived by sons Ronald, Bruce, and Richard (Nancy), daughter Debra Tachibana (Kenji), grandchildren Jennifer Leaf, Kellene Killmer, Candace Globa (Andy), Corrien Erin, Sunny Stauff (Paul), Jamison Killmer, Katrina Tholen (Kyle), Sarah Tachibana (Shane Loveless), Eric Tachi-bana (Li Hsien Lim), great-grandchildren Jennifer, Lauryn, and Mark Tachibana, Annora Leaf, Norah and Graeme Tholen, Mason and Penny Stauff, Colton Cordova, Cecilia and Gabriella Globa, and nieces and nephews, Steven Massie, Lucretia Massie, Phyllis Massie, Joey Kettelkamp (Al), Wells Stewart Marshall III (Mary), Mary Scheider (Jim), and David Marshall (Dominic Wolocko). Born on the family homestead in Lutsen, educated in Grand Marais and at the University of Minnesota. An active 4-H Club member winning many county and state honors in sewing, bread making, and Junior Leadership, as well as a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago in 1937. A 4-H Club Leader for 15 years, won the Golden Clover award for leadership. Office manager for Killmer's Northern Nurseries in Falcon Heights and Apple Valley, associated with major flowerbulb growers Witteman & Co. (Hillegom, Holland) and the Multiflora Bulb & Import Co. Moved to Lake Superior west of Grand Marais, operated a Fodors-listed bed and breakfast inn, Killmers on the Water, for ten years hosting over 400 guests. Sang in church choirs and taught Sunday School for 25 years. Memberships at Methodist Churches in St. Anthony Park and Rosemount, and United Churches of Christ in Falcon Heights and Grand Marais. Moved to Hopkins to live her final years at The Glenn retirement community (formerly St. Therese SW), where she continued to study Bible and read widely.
