Smith, James D. & Margaret G. "Gerry" - James Douglas "Jim" Smith, age 86, of Edina, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on August, 19, 2016. His wife of 64 years, Margaret "Gerry" Smith, age 86, followed him into paradise, (5 days later) on August 24, 2016. Jim and Gerry were preceded in death by their 6th child, a daughter, Mary Margaret who died at birth. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Marian Smith. Gerry is preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents, John and Margaret Manning; her brother, John Manning; sisters, Perky Kehoe and Julie Schlesinger. Jim is survived by brothers, Gene (Dorothy) Smith, John (Ginger) Smith and sister, Katie Harrington. Jim and Gerry are survived by children, Susan (Sohrab) Sadeh, Dennis (Gail) Smith, Steve (Boo) Smith, Michael (Bev) Smith, Juliane (Jim) Sullivan; 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren along with multiple nieces and nephews. Jim was born in Rockford, Illinois on January 21, 1930. Gerry was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 12, 1929. They both attended Marquette University, met their freshmen year and were married on May 17, 1952. Jim was ordained a permanent deacon June 10, 1978. A Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of their 64 years together will be held at 11:00 am, Monday August 29, 2016 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 6820 St. Patrick's Lane, Edina, Minnesota 55439. Visitation will be held Monday, August 29, 2016 at 9:00 am, 2 hours prior to the funeral. Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery (Assembly #4) at 2:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements being handled by Gill Brothers Funeral & Cremation Services. The family would like to extend our deepest and heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful in-home care providers and staff at NC Little Hospice who lovingly cared for Jim and Gerry.
