Rorke, Herbert F. Herb passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 23rd 2016 at the age of 77. He fought cancer like he lived his life; head on, one day at a time and with a healthy dose of humor. Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1938, he often wondered how he ended up in the Midwest. However, he grew to love it here and never regretted calling Minneapolis his home. He lived a life of faith, hope and love. Faith; a hard-won faith in himself and his ability to push through adversity, be it physical or psychological. Hope; that through perseverance, grit and acceptance, he could win the battle against his demons and doubts. Love; that he could understand and embrace his moral compass that included fairness, firmness and above all the notion that we should love one another as we love ourselves. To love ourselves was both the stumbling block and the key to true joy. He was also practical. You had to "live in the real world"; to work, to struggle, to always challenge the status quo as well as one's self. To have goals and a means of measuring them. And finally, to succeed but not at the expense of others. Getting to know people was one of his greatest joys, and along with a natural competitive spirit, a career of sales was the obvious choice. From selling coffee, to paper forms and invoices, to early computers at Control Data, he quickly gained the respect of his peers and became a Vice President at CDC. In 1985, with four kids in college and another not far behind, he took a huge gamble and started his own company Rorke Data, Inc. "With a little luck and a lot of hard work" Rorke Data grew to employ hundreds of people and launch as many careers. He always put the employees first, customers second and "hopefully we will make a little money while we are at it" third. He cared about their families and their well-being. Employees responded with loyalty, longevity and loving respect. Herb led the charge for close to 20 years and Rorke Data carried on another 10 after he retired. He loved his wife of 54 years, Pat. He adored his five children and doted on his ten grandchildren. He swam his daily mile and biked his 15-25. He treasured his friendships and his humor carried him through it all. Herb's own measure of success was his 28-year medallion from Alcoholics Anonymous. Survived by wife Patricia, children Herb (Maggie), Erin, Pam (Mark), Tricia (Rob), John (Jen) and grandchildren Maddie, Mac, Liam, Joe, Josh, Nick, Justine, Allicia, Frannie & J.J and beloved family & friends. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 28th at the Gill Brothers Funeral Home located at 5801 Lyndale Ave South in Minneapolis from 4pm to 8pm. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, June 29th at St. Joan of Arc located at 4537 3rd Ave South in Minneapolis at 11 am, with visitation one hour prior.
