William Thomas Doar, Jr.

Doar, William Thomas Jr Died June 20, 2016 in Naples, FL. Tom, born on August 30, 1920, was predeceased by parents William Thomas and May, brother John and the love of his life Patricia, his wife of 59 years. He was a fantastic story-teller. Most of them started in New Richmond, Wisconsin, where he was born, raised and lived for 95 years. He was devoted to New Richmond and gained great satisfaction from a lifetime as a thoughtful and involved citizen. He was a friend and acquaintance to many, and a generous benefactor. Tom's formal education took place at St. Paul Academy, the University of Colorado and University of Wisconsin Law School. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 and joined his father's law practice in 1947 where he remained, at what is now Doar, Drill and Skow, for over 65 years. From 1969 to 1980 he served as President of Minnesota Tribune Company, which later became the sole owner of Midwest Communications/WCCO. He served as President and Chairman until his retirement in 1990. Tom served on many other boards including the St. Croix Telephone Company, the New Richmond School Board, the New Richmond Golf Club, the Immaculate Conception Church Council and the Minneapolis Downtown Council. He had a well-honed skill of avoiding and deflecting praise. He earned the nickname "The Inspector" because of his keen interest in people, asking questions, in order to connect with them, understand them, and get to know them in genuine and meaningful ways. Tom was the linchpin of the extended family and was known as "Big Tom" to his nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His family loved him and loved hearing his stories, many of them about the history of the family and good friends. He cared greatly for his family and taught his most powerful lessons through the example of how he lived his life. He is survived by his wife Jean Selvig of Naples, FL, his three children: Kathleen, Tom and Patrick and their spouses Alan, Sheila (Mouse) and Nancy; his grandchildren: Anna, Julia, Patricia, Thomas, Charlie and Mullery; and his great grandchildren: Sasha, Talia, Reid, Will, Sam, Ben, Tommy, Georgia, Stella and McGraw. The funeral will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Richmond. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to mass at the church. cullencreafuneralhome.com
