Gloria (Burntvedt) Nelson

Nelson,Gloria Burntvedt 94, died June 21, 2016. She was the first of three children born to Anna and Thorvald Burntvedt. Wife of George N. Nelson (deceased 1996) and mother of George N. Nelson, Jr. (Tamra). Grandmother of Kaarin Nelson Schaffer (Brian) and Berit Nelson Lemons (Bill). Great grandmother of John Lemons, Sveja and Brynja Schaffer. Gloria's life centered on her family, education, health care, church, and her Norwegian heritage. With a BA from Augsburg College ('43) and MAEd from Syracuse University, she began her career as a teacher and moved into administration as dean of students at Waldorf College and Gustavus Adolphus. After her marriage in 1952, she provided a loving and stable home for her adopted son and worked in her husband's real estate development and consulting company for 18 years. Gloria delighted in her Norwegian ancestry and during the 80s she worked passionately for the Norwegian Sesquicentennial, "Ski For Light", and Vinland National Center, and kept strong ties with her Norwegian cousins. Having deep, personal connections with Deaconess Hospital, Gloria put her skill and energy to work on the merger of Deaconess and Fairview Hospitals, serving in a variety of leadership capacities during this period of major transition, including Board of Trustees, Fairview Riverside Medical Center. She was passionate about learning and higher education, keeping close ties with her alma mater Augsburg College where she was the first female Regent (1960-66) and a Distinguished Alumna (1975). She enjoyed many years as a member of American Association of University Women. Gloria's hobbies included family get-togethers, music, reading and walking. She was hospitable and loving, and we will miss her greatly. She was beloved Tante to nephews Dan, Paul, Erik and Thor, and nieces Mary and Beth; beloved friend to sister-in-law LaVerne. Preceded in death by her brother Bob, sister Gracia, brother-in-law Royal. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
