Imholte, John (Jack) Quinn 84, of St. Paul, died April 20. Jack was the son of Lucille and Herbert Imholte and was born and raised in St. Paul. A graduate of Cretin High School in 1948, he served as an artillery spotter in the Korean War. Jack received a BA from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, and a PhD in History from the University of Minnesota. Jack was part of the original faculty of the University of Minnesota, Morris. He was the Chair of the History Department, Provost and later, Chancellor. He retired and returned to St. Paul in 2000. Jack was an avid rower and active historian and was the author of the book, "The First Volunteers: History of the First Minnesota Volunteer Regiment, 1861-1865". He was a volunteer with the Fort Snelling Memorial Rifle Squad. Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Karl, and his sister, Jeanne Hall. Jack is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lucy (nee Gibbs) and his five children Sara (Clint) Beckstrand, Rachel (John Yeamen) Imholte, John (Lynda) Imholte, Rebecca Bann (Tonia) (Michael) and Joseph (Sarah) Imholte and eight grandchildren: Matthew, Elizabeth, William, Clare, Jack, Hailey, Maria and Erik. Mass of Christian Burial Friday, April 25th, 2014 at 10 AM at Lumen Christi Catholic Church, 2055 Bohland Ave. St. Paul. Visitation one hour prior to the mass. Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the John Q. Imholte scholarship fund at the University of Minnesota, Morris.
