Warren Howard Dunn

Dunn, Warren Howard of Naples and Minneapolis, died on April 15, 2014, at 79 years of age. Survived by wife of 58 years, Nancy Nolan Dunn, and daughters Kathleen Sheehy, Erin Dunn (Ted Wentink), Theresa Dunn and Maureen Dunn (Francis Sheehy), and grandchildren - Jessica, Kate, Emilie, Patrick, Kevan, Madeline, Marie and Ellen. We are mourning his loss but celebrating his life. Warren grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. He attended Creighton Prep and Creighton University, where he earned degrees in business and law. He met Nancy, the love of his life, in high school. They married in 1955. After graduating from law school in 1958, Warren became a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His work for the Bureau from 1959 to 1966 required the family to move often, from Omaha to Louisiana, New York, California, and Milwaukee. In California, Warren attended the Defense Language Institute and learned Italian and Sicilian. His grandchildren, from an early age, knew the meaning of "Andiamo!" While living in Milwaukee, Warren began working for the Miller Brewing Company. His integrity and high ethical standards in business moved him from positions of assistant legal counsel (1966 to 1973), vice-president and general counsel (1973 to 1984), senior vice-president of administration (1984-90), executive vice-president (1990-91), and president, CEO, and Chairman (1991-94). He and Nancy traveled the world together on business, but they always preferred to be at home with their girls. Warren was a man of many skills and much energy. He was a good mechanic and tinkerer with engines. One winter he rebuilt a discarded outboard motor in his garage so that he could take his children on terrifying rides on the open waters of Green Bay on Lake Michigan during summer vacations in Door County, Wisconsin. When he retired, he and Nancy moved to Naples and established a summer home on Lake Minnetonka in Minneapolis, where he purchased a series of boats, all of which were named "The Lite House," with much bigger motors. He was a runner, a golfer, a photographer, a car washer, a grocery shopper, a griller, a card shark in his day, and he liked to do laundry. He loved to read mystery novels and listen to country western music, Strauss waltzes, and brass marching bands at high volume, especially early in the morning. He tried to love fishing with his sons-in-law John and Francis Sheehy and Ted Wentink, but it required too much quiet sitting as opposed to tearing around on the water. He also loved the Rocky Mountains and treasured the many family trips he organized with children and grandchildren to ranches in Colorado and Wyoming. Although he was highly successful at his job, Warren taught his children that family always comes first, and he was always there for them. He was an affectionate, generous, and reliable friend, but he was not good at small talk, and he cursed a blue streak on the golf course. Warren was preceded in death by his sisters Barbara Ehlers of Phoenix, Frances Cheek of Webster City, Iowa, and Margaret Rogers of Omaha, as well as his son-in-law John Sheehy of Minneapolis. We hope they are golfing together on some heavenly course. His spirit will be with us always. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home, 28300 Tamiami Trail So., Bonita Springs, FL 34134. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held later at Church of the Incarnation in Minneapolis, with interment at Lakewood Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the Naples Equestrian Challenge, 206 Ridge Drive, Naples 34108, a cause close to Warren's heart. Arrangements are being handled by Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home.
