Forsberg, William "Bill" At age 88 Bill crossed the finish line September 21st 2013. In the game of life, Bill was a winner. He graduated from South High School in 1943, and went into the Army. He was in the Normandy landing and became an anti-aircraft gunner in Patton's third army. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes in northern France, the Rhineland, and in central Europe. After he came home he went to the U. of M. and got his BS and MA degrees in Elementary Education, also all credit work for his Doctorate. He then got a job in Fairmont, MN opening up a new school and was a teaching principal. After four years he was hired by the Robbinsdale 281 school district. He opened up three new schools: Noble, Cavanaugh, and Zachary Lane, and was also principal at Sunny Hollow school. He then became Director of Elementary Education. He was elected president of the Mn. Elementary Principals Association, and in 1970 was president of the National Association of Elementary School Principals. Bill did a lot of traveling for the National Department, and was an excellent speaker. He was given the WCCO " Good Neighbor Award" for opening up new schools and for outstanding leadership as an educator. When Bill retired, he was Associate Superintendent of District 281. Bill had a great love of the out-of-doors, and went on many BWCA canoe trips with family and friends. Over the years Bill and Pinza did a lot of traveling. Turkey, Russia, Estonia, Finland, China, Mongolia, Tibet and Machu Picchu were some of the most interesting. All those who remember Bill know about his great sense of humor. This served him well through almost twelve years of Alzheimer’s. Bill is survived by wife, Virginia (Pinza), of 66 years; children, Steven, Bonnie, (Steve Shallbetter), Paul, (Michele); grandsons, Steve and Ryan Forsberg, Erik and Matt Shallbetter; brother, David (Claire); sister, Doris; brother, Paul (deceased) and many loving nieces and nephews.
