John Dwight 'Jack' Jensen

Jensen, John "Jack" Dwight 91, of De Smet, SD, passed away surrounded by family on April 29, 2016 at the St. Therese Care Center at Hopkins, MN. His funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 7, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in De Smet at 10 AM. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM. In lieu of flowers the family requests direct memorials to the De Smet St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, De Smet, SD 57231. Jack Jensen was born March 29, 1925 to parents Christopher and Bernadette (O'Connell) Jensen. Jack and his nine siblings were raised in Lake Preston, SD. A 1943 graduate of Lake Preston High School, he married Mary Margaret Braun on June 6, 1947. The couple began their new lives farming in the area and later on their farm/beef cattle ranch in rural De Smet, SD. His love of the land and commitment to soil conservation made him a longstanding supporter of ethanol and soy bean processing and an avid advocate of local farm co-ops. Additionally, he was active in the Knights of Columbus, the Kingbrook Rural Water Board, Spirit Lake Township and St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery Board. As a couple, the Jensens raised four children -- Vicki (Steve) Kattke, Rick (Cheryl) Jensen, Jill (Rich) Carroll, and Jon (Marion) Jensen. Jack and Mary enjoyed square dancing and ballroom dancing and particularly loved the music of Lawrence Welk and Mitch Miller. Through the years, the couple also enjoyed bowling, golfing and bridge playing. Jack enjoyed hunting pheasant, waterfowl and deer. The 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren were frequent, and well enjoyed visitors during his final years at St. Therese Care Center. They are Gretchen (Philip) Baker and their children Graham, Charles and Henry; Jon (Jocelyn) Kattke and their daughter Hunter; Matthew (Michelle) Jensen and their daughter Michaela; Jesse Jensen; Sarah (Tim) Anderson; Ross (Kari) Johnson and children Erik and Kaia; Adam (Michelle) Johnson and children Eli and Corbin; Jaime Jensen; Austin Carroll; and Andrew (Emily) Frelich and children Vera and Beau. He is survived by his wife, Mary; four children; grandchildren; great- grandchildren; sisters Patricia (Kermit) Folsland, Kay (the late Francis) Hendricks, and Shirley (Lowell) Wilde; brothers Robert (Ruth) and Jerome Jensen; sisters-in-law Bonnie Jensen and Jackie Ward; and brother-in-law David Braun. Four siblings preceded him in death: Donna Nelson, Marguerite Farnsworth, Daniel Jensen and James Jensen.
