Lydia Lee

Lee, Lydia 1948 - 2016 Former Minneapolis School Board Director Lydia Lee died in her Newark, California, home on April 28 after a two-year battle with cancer. She is survived by husband, Michael O'Donnell, son Christopher Yue (Aleia) of Maple Grove, stepson Dr. Ryan O'Donnell (Esther) of Minneapolis, sister Wendy Lee of Hayward, California, brother Shuman Lee of Roseville, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ms Lee served on the Minneapolis School Board from 2005-2011 before moving to California to care for her ailing mother. Before running for school board, Lydia worked on Middle School Reform at the district office, was a mentor teacher, and taught ten years of middle school math at Andersen Open. A tireless educator Lydia gave workshops on Learning Structures and the Culture of Poverty (Ruby Payne), learning and the brain, and authentic assessment. Recognized for her leadership and knowledge, she was asked to join the board for the National Organization of Greater City Schools in 2009. Lydia's annual Chinese New Years party at her and Michael's Uptown home was celebrated by nearly a hundred guests and a cherished event for attendees. The party often included the animal of the year, bringing in roosters, sheep, dogs, snakes, rats, rabbitsincluding magician. Once even a small horse, and two baby tigers represented their animal years. Her generosity was known to all those in her circle. She gave generously of her money and time. She worked with Kids Vote, Homeless Connect, and Learning Works. In 2010 she began a scholarship fund for girls wanting to further their studies of mathematics. She called it Female Mathematicians Rock! In lieu of flowers or gifts, Lydia suggested you give to your favorite charity, especially those that benefit the education of our children. A memorial celebration will be held later this summer in Minneapolis.
