William F. 'Bill' Hueg, Jr.

Hueg, William F., Jr. "Bill" Age 92 of Mendota Heights, MN passed away peacefully on February 18, 2016 at home. Preceded in death by his mother and father Mary and William Hueg, his sister Ramona, his daughter Anne, many friends and colleagues. Survived by wife of 37 years, Hella Mears, sons William III (Susan), Thomas (Teresa), John (Amy), Paul (Lynnda), Mark (Kristin) and Michael (Theresea), 18 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, niece Ramona, nephew Curtis, many colleagues and friends. Bill was born January 12, 1924 to Mary Lynch Hueg and William Hueg in Queens, New York. Dr. William F. Hueg completed undergraduate studies at Cornell University, earned masters and doctoral degrees from Michigan State University. Since joining the University of Minnesota in 1957, as an Extension Agronomist, Hueg's career was marked by steady advancement - to director of the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station and later Vice President for agriculture and Dean of the Institute of Agriculture, Forestry, and Home Economics. Bill brought distinction and recognition to dedicated scientists and research programs by delivering to lawmakers and the public, quantifiable measures of the benefits of agricultural research - tangible proof of research's monetary impact on Minnesota, the nation, and the world. His accomplishments in extension and research, administration and resource development have brought honor and international acclaim to the University of Minnesota. One of Dr. Hueg's outstanding characteristics as an administrator was his commitment to interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches in both research and extension. Bill was recognized as an innovative administrator and leader. His leadership was recognized by his election as a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Bill was nominated on September 13, 1976 by President Gerald R. Ford to serve on the National Science Board, National Science Foundation. Bill played an important and active role in the field of international agricultural development. Bill's public service to his science, the university, the State of Minnesota and the international world of agriculture was exemplary. Dr. Hueg was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Law in 1998 by the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. Bill and Hella Mears Hueg established The Hueg-Harrison Fellowship in 2002. The Hueg-Harrison Fellowship honors the strong student/mentor relationship that Bill experienced and enjoyed from 1952 to 2000 between he and Carter M. Harrison, Ph.D., who was a Professor of Farm Crops at Michigan State University from 1937 until his retirement in 1971. The Hueg-Harrison Fellowship is awarded annually to recognize the student/mentor relationship that evolves during the pursuit of a M.S. or Ph.D. in production (applied) agriculture. The recipients are called Hueg-Harrison Fellows. In 2009, Bill was awarded the Siehl Prize for Excellence in Agriculture.Bill's family is grateful for the many condolences, expressions of respect, admiration and friendship. A celebration of Bill's life and accomplishments will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at 1:30 pm at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Snyder Auditorium, 3675 Arboretum Drive, Chaska, MN 55318.
