Rev. Maynard Penn Johnson

Johnson, Rev. Maynard Penn Age 92, of Brooklyn Park, MN, passed away Feb. 11, 2016. He was preceded in death by parents, Albert and Selma (nee Erickson) and daughter Susan who was buried in Ethiopia. Maynard resided in Pennsylvania until the violent death of his father resulted in his family moving back to rural North Dakota. He graduated from Bowbells High School class of 1941. Pearl Harbor brought enlistment in the Army Air Force and graduation as an officer and pilot May 1943. He served in the European Theater in the Troop Carrier Command participating in major combat operations. Upon discharge he attended Bethel Jr. College, A.A., University of MN, B.S. and Bethel Seminary, BD in 1951. Appointed as a missionary of the Baptist General Conference in 1950, he and his family left for Ethiopia in 1951 where he served for 22 years, much of the time in a Leprosarium in the Ginde Beret district. The ultimate success of his work there gave him great happiness in his later years. He became Pastor of Shalom Baptist Church, Hutchinson, MN in 1973 and served there until 1983. Maynard returned to Africa for another mission in Mbingo, Cameroun in 1992. He drove buses part-time for the Twin Cities MTC before retirement. He remained involved in church and civic work late into his life including the Guardian ad Litem program in Florida. Maynard's Christian values were lived out every day in his interactions with his fellows. He was a servant of Christ and served as a role model to his family and all who knew him. In retirement he lived in Minnesota and Florida. Maynard is survived by his wonderful wife Thelma (nee Burgeson). They celebrated 67 years together and were blessed with five children, Timothy, Daniel, Susan, Allan and Ann (Kastner) and ten grandchildren, Summer Allen, Derek Kastner, Amanda Kastner, Britta, Naomi Price, Sara Kangas, Brady, Davis, Sydney and Adam, one great grandchild named in his honor Arthur Maynard Price.Visitation 10 AM & Service 11 AM on Tuesday, Feb 16th at Edinbrook Church, Brooklyn Park, MN.Interment at Ft. Snelling Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Menschen Für Menschen who have ongoing development work in Mukadima, Ethiopia.
