Daniel Bruce 'Tiny' Bowers

Bowers, Daniel Bruce "Tiny" passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. He lived 68 years. Dan was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in early January that rapidly advanced throughout his body. He underwent only one palliative-based chemo treatment before being moved to a St. Louis Park, MN hospice care facility where he passed away peacefully. Danny is survived by his siblings Gordon Jr. (Diane), Tom (Darlene), David (Diane), Steve (Sandi), and Mark (Susan), as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by father (Gordon Sr.) and mother (Virgina). Daniel passed out of this world as he had lived in it. Calm, accepting, loving, and present. The light that glowed brightly in Dan will be deeply missed by us all. Like all five of his brothers who came before and after, racing began for Dan on the shores of Cottagewood out of the Minnetonka Yacht Club, and transitioned into an equally long and successful career racing out of the Wayzata Yacht Club. He was a "natural" helmsman first in X boats, then in M-16s, E Scows, and S2 7.9s. One of the key racing events that stands out most prominently was his winning the 1970 E Scow Inland Lakes Yachting Association Championship on Lake Mendota, WI with brothers Gordy and Steve as crew. Dan won that regatta wearing a knee-high cast on his left leg due to a broken ankle. Dan would "crutch" his way to the boat, hop to the back helmsman position, wrap his cast in garbage bags and duct tape, and steer the M-14 named "Swampfox" to victory as if it were nothing at all. After scows, Dan became the primary helmsman for his best friend, Jerry Wintheiser, aboard "Tuesday", Jerry's S2 7.9. The Wintheiser/ Bowers team dominated S2 7.9 racing for 23 years and won the Wayzata Yacht Club Championship more often than not. Sail on Dan! Private family funeral and Celebration of Life memorials are pending. Huber Funeral& Cremation Services Excelsior Chapel 952-474-9595 huberfunerals.com
