Karen (Landry) Mulkey

Mulkey, Karen Landry passed away New Year's Eve with her loving family by her side. Karen was born in Minneapolis to Dr. William and Eileen Nienaber. She graduated from Washburn high school, attended Macalester College and graduated with a BA from the University of Minnesota. Karen was an accomplished artist as well as a wonderfully talented actress. As a graduate student at U of M, Karen was awarded a McKnight fellowship and afterward became a member of the Guthrie theater company for five years. After starring in the feature film, The Personals, Karen decided to move to Los Angeles and pursue a career in film and television. She appeared in over 50 movies and television shows including: Patti Rocks, On the Wings of Eagles, Star Trek, 6 Feet Under, Sweet Land, St. Elsewhere, Beverly Hills 90290, and Come Simi, for which she won best actress. Karen kept her stage work alive; directing, teaching and acting in Los Angeles at the Pacific Resident Theater, the Ruskin Theater, and the Rogue Theater. But her Minnesota roots were deep, and she continued to give amazing performances in Minnesota, most notably the Sundance best film winner, "Patti Rocks", which she co-wrote. Karen played the title role with wit and grace, earning two Spirit Award nominations for best screenplay and best actress. Karen played great roles at Park Square Theatre, The Guthrie, Theatre Jeune Lune and the Mixed Blood Theatre. Two Mixed Blood productions Karen starred in, "Flags" and "Pure Confidence", went on to have successful runs off-Broadway in New York at the 59e59 Theater. There were many shows of Karen's beautiful art work in Los Angeles. She painted in the Minnesota countryside, in her Venice, California home, the canal neighborhood and studios of artists George Small and Corrine Hartley. Karen is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Chris Mulkey, their two daughters Amelia Mulkey Anderson, Elizabeth Mulkey, granddaughter Willow Moon Anderson, as well as her sisters Ruth Grant, Susan Macpherson and Mary Nienaber, Aunts and Uncle: Bert and Jan Nienaber and Jean Kadlec. She was also loved by tons of wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial service: Saturday, February 13th, 3 pm, Unity Church, 733 Portland Ave., St. Paul, MN 55104.
