Reintjes, Gretchen, CSJ Died on Friday, January 22, at St. Joseph's Hospital after a very brief illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mathias and Evelyn Plaisance Reintjes and brother, John. Sister Gretchen spent the first 20 years of her ministry teaching science, religion and English to junior and senior high school students at St. James Catholic High School, Grand Forks, North Dakota; Central Catholic in Marshall, MN; St. Mary's in Waverly, MN; Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, MN; and at Ascension in Minneapolis, MN. She moved to North Carolina in 1981 to care for her aging mother. She spent over thirty years doing a variety of social services volunteer activities in North Carolina, reaching out to immigrants and refugee families, to veterans, and to anyone who was disenfranchised. For this work she was awarded the first "Sister Gretchen Award" offered by the University of North Carolina. In there efforts, she worked with people of all faith traditions. Personal relationships were established and maintained through impassioned discussions, attendance at peace rallies and sharing philosophies of life. Sister Gretchen is survived by her sister-in-law, Verne (Maroney) Reintjes; her nieces, Ann (Charles) Krouse, Christine (Ken ) Martin and Susan; her nephew, Peter (Lea); grandnieces and nephews; other relatives and friends; and the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet and Consociates. A wake will be held on Monday, February 8 at 10:00 AM at the Sisters of St. Joseph Provincial House (1880 Randolph Ave, St. Paul) with the funeral liturgy at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Presentation Chapel (1880 Randolph Avenue).
