Boone, Charlie Charles Everett "Charlie" Boone, 88, passed away quietly Nov. 22 after a brief illness. Charlie and his twin sister Charlotte were born Aug. 21, 1927 to the Rev. Francis and Lillian Hattabaugh Boone in Rutland, Vt. Raised in New London, Ct., Charlie attended the Bulkeley School for Boys before enlisting in the US Army Air Corps in 1945. Following military service he studied drama and art at San Francisco State University and the Chouinard Art Institute. A member of the San Francisco Repertory Theatre, Charlie applied his passion for performing to radio, working at stations in Wadena, Colorado Springs and Fargo before arriving at WCCO AM in 1959. In 1961 he teamed up with fellow announcer Roger Erickson to form one of the most popular radio partnerships in America, a union that lasted 37 years. After Roger retired in 1998 Charlie hosted a weekly program until his retirement in 2010. During his 51-year career at WCCO Charlie received numerous awards on behalf of the station including the Columbia Dupont and Peabody. He also hosted countless charitable events benefiting education, the arts and health research and was a member of numerous nonprofit boards. In addition to his twin sister, Charlie is survived by Dr Carol Heen, his spouse; daughter Jaimie (Eric) Lavanger; son Christopher (Shelly) Boone; grandchildren Hadley (Luke) Wilcox; David Lavanger; Calvin and Charlie H. Boone and great grandson Sullivan Wilcox. Charlie's family wishes to thank WCCO and its countless listeners for their outpouring of affection in the wake of his passing. Memorials may be directed to the Minnesota Radio Talking Book Network, the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting, the Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center or an arts organization of your choice. At Charlie's request a private remembrance is planned.
