Carufel, Alton J. "Al" was born October 14, 1933 in Minneapolis, Minn. He died at the Minnesota Veteran's Home on January 13, 2019 from a worn- out, but much used heart. A Korean War veteran, Al served with honor in the U.S. Navy before beginning his career as a real estate appraiser. On July 13, 1968, Al married his main squeeze, Theresa (Blaeser), with whom they had four children. And like any good husband, Al took all his fashion cues from her. His signature look was in a bright pink polo. A gentle, loving and caring man, Al will be remembered for his devout faith; a hearty laugh; love for singing and jazz music; saying that every home cooked meal was "the best he's ever had;" and for passing on his fondness of Lake Harriet to his children. He also had a life-long love affair with caramel rolls, date bars and butter brickle ice cream. Family members who cleared the path for Al include his father Alton; mother Agnes; brothers Lionel and Frank; sister Joyce Grampre; son Craig; and grandson Wyatt Shepherd. Al will be supremely missed by Theresa, his wife of more than 50 years; sister Barbara; daughters Michelle (John) Twohig, Lisa (Steve) Shepherd and Sarah (Joe) Hauer; and nine grandchildren: Emily, Grace and Livia Twohig; Finnegan, Luke and Hope Shepherd; & William, Benjamin and Ellen Hauer. Visitation at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, and funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace. 5071 Eden Ave., Edina. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to NAMI-MN or Our Lady of Grace.
