Sampsell, Jack E. Age 93 of Edina, passed away October 13, 2018. Born on January 28, 1925 in Oil City, PA, Jack enlisted in the Navy at age 17. He served on the USS Aulick in the Pacific theater of World War II. Shortly after Thanksgiving 1944, in the aftermath of the battle of Leyte Gulf, the Aulick was attacked by kamikaze planes. Jack witnessed the deaths of several shipmates and friends in the attack. He survived and was awarded the Purple Heart. In 1945, Jack married Betty Leach, and the two remained married for 68 years. They raised their family in Minnesota. Throughout his life, Jack remained proud of his military service, his family, and his Minnesota sports teams. Jack is preceded in death by his wife, his brother, Al, and his sister, Betty. He is survived by his children, John (Margie) Sampsell, Kathy (Jeff) Madsen and Mary Jo (Mike) Lehmann; his grandchildren, Sara (Ted) Sampsell-Jones, Laura (Jesse) Bergman, John (Mindy) Madsen, Brian (Jill) Madsen, Joey (Christine) Lehmann and Kenny Lehmann; his 10 great-grandchildren; and, his dear friend, Alice Doll. Memorial Service Thursday, October 25th, 11 am at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, W. 50th Street & Hwy 100, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Internment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Honor Flight Twin Cities.
