Cole, Doris "Dorie" Elaine (Derscheid) Age 95 of Edina, passed away September 21, 2018 at home, surrounded with love by her beloved family. Dorie is survived by her husband George of 70 years; children Cheri Cole, Candy (Jim) DeLong; grand- children Jay (Emily) DeLong, Arianna Kamp; and great-granddaughter Everly Skylar DeLong. Dorie is now cradled in the arms of those she loved so deeply and who passed before: daughter, Karen; grandson, Chris; son-in-law, Dan; parents, Edith and Glen; siblings, Jean, Jane, Elsie, Einar; infant twins, Mildred and Margaret, Max, James, and Roger. Dorie was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the third of fifteen children. The years spent growing up on her parent's farm called "Sunnyside" were joyous ones. The rich deep love Dorie felt from her parents and the close bond she shared with each of her siblings made her childhood perfect in every way. After Dorie graduated from High School, she lived in Des Moines where she attended business school. Two years later, guided by her independent spirit, Dorie took the train out to LA to join her two older sisters. During her two years in LA, Dorie worked for Time Life Publishing Co. and also the American Gem Society. Returning to Iowa in 1946, Dorie resided once again in Des Moines where she worked at the Chief Attorney's office of the VA taking shorthand for their lawyers. While back in Iowa, Dorie met George at the wedding of mutual friends. They married in 1948 and raised their three daughters in Crystal where they lived for twenty years. In 1973 they moved to Edina. Dorie and George both shared a love of the outdoors. Being immersed in nature and feeling its joy was an important part of their lives. As they began their married life, they made several trips to the Boundary Waters. They soon passed this love of adventure on to their daughters. Summer vacations were spent camping and hiking at Gooseberry Falls on the North Shore, the Black Hills and Glacier National Park. Winter memories were skiing at Sugar Hills, Troll- haugen, Hardscrabble, Lutsen, Mt. Telemark, and Porcupine Mountain. How vivid your daughters still remember each camping, hiking, and skiing adventure-for they were tailor-made for our happiness and were magical. Because of Dorie's rich experiences living in the country, she always, and throughout her life, felt a deep appreciation to the land and all things growing. A day would simply not be complete without spending time outdoors. Improving the landscaping or taking care of the many flowers in her yard were pastimes she loved immensely. Dorie was an avid bridge player. From the time they were married, she and George loved playing bridge with their many friends. Dorie also began playing bridge with friends from her Crystal neighborhood. After moving to Edina, Dorie continued playing bridge with this same bridge club for over forty years. As your daughters we remember an idyllic childhood-perfect in every way. It was a childhood full of contentment, joy, and of feeling so richly loved. Each day of our lives felt sunlit because of your devotion to us, so deeply felt. With love we remember the caring support you gave your daughters for all the precious animals we brought home to live with us. You graciously shared your home with our pet toads, salamanders, white rats, guinea pigs, bunnies, ducks, fish, turtles, chicks, and many cats. With love, we remember your boundless energy as you volunteered each year in our classrooms and the years you spent being each of our Girl Scout Leaders. We remember with love your care packages that arrived each month while the three of us were in college. Inside each package-nestled amongst the most beautiful shades of tissue paper-were our favorite homemade cookies, bars, and breads. And always, a long long letter about the news back home and in Iowa- and signed with the words, "Love you, Mom." We remember with love the wonderful breakfasts you made for us every school day. Each breakfast was fit for a queen. Your daughters especially remember your homemade buttermilk pancakes. You patiently took the time to ask us our favorite animal-and then before we knew it-we were delightfully pouring syrup over a pancake in the shape of a cat, bunny or dog. How very blessed we felt growing up, as we do now, to have had a mother who lived life with so much joy to give. Love filled our home. We thank you for giving us the happiest childhood imaginable. This endless love and affection flowed over to your three grandchildren. They will forever remember your sleep over breakfasts fit for kings and queens, playing board games for hours and hours on the floor, and your very famous and very long back rubs. It was your daughter's greatest joy to have you live with us in our home these past years. To awaken each morning and see your sweet, loving smile and to have the chance to kiss you good night each evening are memories we will always forever cherish. We thank you for teaching us how to live a life for others. We are the recipients of your endless gifts: devotion, patience, compassion, gratefulness and inner strength. We will feel your love for us forever and ever.
