Charles Matthew Hooley

Hooley, Charles Matthew Age 89 of Stillwater, MN died peacefully on June 17, 2018 He was born to Matthew and Alva Hooley on October 18, 1928. Charlie had a keen business aptitude and a passion for innovation early in life. His success in life reflected his strong beliefs in perseverance and hard work, but his true happiness came from Nancy, the love of his life, his 6 children and 22 grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor and was exceptionally kind. At age 16, he bought a popcorn wagon and started his first business. Later, he would buy, repair and sell used bicycles and cars. Charlie joined the family business, Hooley's Supermarkets in Stillwater and later managed the Hooley's grocery in Red Wing, MN. He also founded Hooley's Wholesale Meats. In 1968, Charlie co-founded Cub Foods (Consumers United for Buying) with his brother Jack and brother-in-law Robert Thueson, along with their business partner Culver Davis. After Charlie retired as the President of Cub Foods, he was appointed Mayor of Stillwater in 1993. In retirement, Charlie pursued his passions of raising and training Belgian and Morgan horses, sailing on Lake Superior, scuba diving, piloting small planes, restoring Model A Fords as well as developing residential real estate. Civic responsibilities were a big part of his life, including serving in the Marine Corps and serving on many charitable boards. A graduate of the class of 1947, he received the Stillwater High School Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy; his six children, Maureen Bausch (Bill Marzolf), Chip (Meg) Hooley, Kathy (Terry) Hayden, Nan (Mark) Robinson, Colleen (Jamie) Fritschel, and Mark (Anne) Hooley; his grandchildren, Heidi, Elle and Tom Bausch, Molly (Nic) Oklobzija, Shannon (Steve) Powell, Matt (Savanna) Hooley, Kelsey, Adam and Carolyn Hayden, Matt (Katherine) Robinson, Elise (Alex) Clufetos, Mike, Alec, Anna and Will Robinson, Sam, Jack and Ben Fritschel, Charlie, Michael, Patrick and Catherine Hooley; great-grand children Ella and Fiona Oklobzija; his siblings, Marge and Tom; and his sister-in-law, Judy (Tom) Wilson. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack (Joyce) Hooley; sisters, Jean (Clarence) Corrigan and Dorothy (Robert) Thueson; daughter, Mary Clare; and great-granddaughter Evelyn Oklobzija. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018, at the Church of St. Michael, 611 S. 3rd St., Stillwater, MN 55082. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm 7:00pm on Thursday June 21, 2018 at Simonet Funeral Home, 6429 Osgood Ave. N., Stillwater as well as one hour prior to the Mass in the church atrium. Private family interment will be at St. Michael's Cemetery, Bayport, MN.
