Rutter, Elva Ann (Gunderson) age 91, of Deephaven, Minnesota, passed away March 18, 2018 at Folkestone Gables Care Center in Wayzata, MN surrounded by her loving family. Eve was born in Wittenberg, Wisconsin and graduated Valedictorian from Wittenberg High School in 1944. She attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison where she met her husband, Tom, both work-ing in the student union. Together they moved from Wisconsin to Montana, finally settling in Minnesota in 1957. After graduating from UW-Madison, Eve worked as a chemistry and home economics teacher at the Spring Green, Wisconsin high school. She had a lifelong interest in gardening, the arts, family, cooking, and travel. She had a passion for walking along the seashore in Lutsen, Sanibel, Mendocino, and beyond. Eve was devoted to her family and participated fully in each of her children's lives, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams and passions. Likewise, she was devoted to her husband and lifelong love, Tom, who passed away just four months ago. Together they enjoyed entertaining, worldwide travel, outdoor activities, and cultivated a deep appreciation for modern art, design, architecture, music, photography, and theatre. Her friends describe her as one who "always had a kind word." One close friend said, "She helped me become the person I am today I learned so much from her she was a mentor and teacher for me in so many ways," and these words could easily have been spoken by others, most of all her four children. She will be remembered as someone whose word stood tall, and who expected everyone to be the best person they could be. Eve is survived by her children, Roxanna, Russell, Gregg, and Elizabeth; grandchildren, Amelia, Maxwell, Miranda, and Kaliska; nephews Tom (Barb) Gunderson, and Rick Gunderson; grand-nephew Shane (Kristen) Gunderson and grand-niece Katie Gunderson; and three great-grand-nieces. She is known for her unbounded kindness, unconditional love, and buttermilk pancakes. Memorials preferred to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum or UW-Madison Alumni Association.
