Helen E. Garnaas

Garnaas, Helen E. A librarian who loved photography, travel, cooking, music, and her Scandinavian heritage, died March 15, 2018 in St. Paul, MN. She was 97, born on May 2, 1920 the firstborn child of Anna Petersen Garnaas and Tollof Bjorn Garnaas, in Sheyenne, North Dakota. She grew up helping in the family general store, and reading voraciously. After high school, she earned a bachelor's degree in English at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota in 1942, and then earned a bachelor's degree in Library Science in 1945 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She worked at the Grand Forks Public Library from 1945-1950. She moved to the Minneapolis Public Library beginning in 1951, and advanced to department chair of government documents in 1964 before retiring in 1983. She served her community as the human precursor to the Internet. Helen never owned a car, and took delight in walking or taking the bus from her condominium on Nicollet Mall to work downtown at the Minneapolis Public Library. Helen traveled the world extensively throughout her life, with her camera and friends, to many beautiful and exotic places. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Paul Garnaas, her brother-in-law, Joel Belgum, and her nephew, Doug Belgum. She is survived by her sister, Bernice Belgum, and also by seven nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren. She resided many years in downtown Minneapolis, and her last years at the Wellington Senior Living Center, 2235 Rockwood Avenue, St. Paul, 55116, where her sister Bernice lives. The family is especially grateful for the kindness and loving care Helen received at the Wellington, and for the hospice care Helen received through Interim Health-care, St. Paul. A memorial service will be held at Central Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, MN on April 13, 2018 with visitation at 1:00 pm and service at 2:00 pm. Interment will be at the Riverside and Prairie Home Cemetery in Moorhead, MN at a later date. Helen Garnaas was a member of Central Lutheran Church, Minneapolis. She supported the Minnesota Orchestra, Concordia College in Moorhead, and the Vesterheim Norwegian Museum, Decorah, Iowa. Donations may be made to any of these.
